ICC Banking Commission has published TA briefing no. 11

18 September 2024 the ICC Banking Commission has published TA briefing no. 11 titled “Definition of Trade Finance”

The trigger for the briefing is that “there is no consensual agreement on the definition of "Trade Finance" by regulators on a global basis” and that “a misleading and oversimplified definition of trade finance may result in unintended negative consequences for the business”.

The briefing can be found here:

https://library.iccwbo.org/tfb/tfb-briefings.htm

Where the full content can be found.

In short, the summary / definition is:

“Trade finance is a financial service facilitating the real economy, enabling businesses to finance, monetise, risk mitigate and settle trade flows, thus supporting the movement of goods and/or the performance of services regardless of maturity, both internationally and domestically.”
